Bartlesville Police Department Officers Gary Sutton and Sgt. Daniel Mains received the BPD Life Saving Award during the City Council meeting Monday. Mains and Sutton were awarded the honor for administering life saving measures to a local individual suffering from an apparent overdose.

The two responded to a call on Jan. 19 in which a female appeared to have overdosed. Sutton, who arrived first on the scene, administered Narcan, a life-saving drug carried by all Bartlesville police officers. Mains arrived shortly after and applied a sternum rub, “which is painful and will wake most passed out subjects because of the discomfort,” said Police Chief Tracy Roles.

Roles said the female did not respond to the sternum rub, at which time Sutton administered another dose of Narcan.

“After the second round of Narcan, Sgt. Mains again applied the sternum rub, at which time Sgt. Mains did get a reaction,” Roles said. “The female slowly regained consciousness and started talking and sitting up.

“There is no doubt that Officer Sutton and Sgt. Main’s performance in this case should stand as example to other officers and supervisors in this department as to how a quick response, demeanor, calm while under stress, and focusing on the task at hand, will save a life. Officer Sutton and Sgt. Mains showed all these qualities and saved a life.”
